Choosing light when the world feels heavy

Choosing light when the world feels heavy

"When you can't find the sunshine, be the sunshine." — Unknown

There are moments when life reminds us how fragile everything truly is.

This week, as I watched the devastating images coming from Venezuela after the earthquakes, my heart felt torn in two. Living thousands of miles away while people I love were helping on the ground left me feeling helpless, overwhelmed, and deeply sad.

I cried. I questioned why tragedies happen. I wished I could do more. I felt myself spiraling into a dark hole when, during a conversation with someone dear to me, something shifted. They gently reminded me that this is exactly when gratitude and mindfulness become more than beautiful ideas. They become a way of living.

Mindfulness is not pretending everything is okay. It is allowing ourselves to fully feel the sadness, the uncertainty, and the fear... while also remembering to come back to this very moment.

This breath. This heartbeat. This day.

Gratitude isn't denying someone else's suffering. It is recognizing that today, if we are safe, healthy, surrounded by people we love, able to create, work, hug our family, share a meal, or simply watch another sunset, those ordinary moments are extraordinary gifts.

None of us knows what tomorrow will bring. Life can change in a single minute. Maybe that awareness isn't meant to scare us. Maybe it's meant to wake us up, to love a little deeper, worry a little less, stop postponing joy, and appreciate the life we have today instead of waiting for the perfect tomorrow.

I also learned through these difficult days that we have a responsibility to take care of ourselves. Because when we nourish our bodies, protect our peace, and care for our mental health, we aren't turning away from others. We're making sure we have the strength to keep showing up.

From afar, my family and I continue supporting those affected in Venezuela in every way we can. While I wish I could physically be there, I know that staying grounded, healthy, and hopeful allows me to continue helping instead of becoming consumed by despair.

Hope doesn't erase hardship. It gives us the strength to face it. It helps us focus on what we can do instead of what we can't control.

Sometimes the greatest act of kindness is simply refusing to let darkness extinguish your light. Because your light may become someone else's hope

Three benefits of choosing hope during difficult times

1. Hope gives you strength and clarity.

Hope doesn't ignore reality. It helps quiet fear, clear your mind, and focus your energy on what truly matters. Instead of feeling paralyzed, you can take one meaningful step at a time.

2. It helps you care for yourself and others.

When you care for your own body, mind, and heart, you build the resilience to keep supporting those who need you. Taking care of yourself isn't selfish—it's what allows you to continue giving.

3. It helps you treasure every moment.

Difficult times remind us that life can change in an instant. They also remind us to appreciate today's simple blessings—the people we love, the memories we're making, and the gift of being here.

As you color this page, let each section remind you that hope begins with you.

Take one deep breath. Notice what is good in this moment. Care for yourself with kindness. Reach out to someone who needs support. And treasure today, because every ordinary moment is an extraordinary gift!
