Beyond Fitting In
The freedom to become who you truly are.
“Care about what other people think, and you will always be their prisoner.”
Attributed to Lao Tzu
A few days ago, during a conversation, someone brought up an interesting thought:
What if people are not watching us as closely as we think they are?
We talked about how much of our lives can be shaped, and sometimes limited, by what we imagine others think about us. Over the following days, that same idea kept appearing in conversations, in my thoughts, and even on social media. So I decided to stop, pay attention, and share this reflection with you.
Is it real, or is it in our heads?
Throughout my life, I've seen so many people, including myself, living with the fear of what others might think. How should I look? Am I being too much? What if I stand out? Will people like me?
During my twenties, with the help of my dad's life experience, I began learning how to free myself from that imaginary jail. An invisible cage that was holding back so much of who I was and who I could become. Realizing that many of those walls existed only in my mind was liberating. It gave me space to grow into a more original, creative, and confident version of myself.
The invisible cage
When we worry too much about how others see us, we begin adjusting ourselves. We speak a little less, wear the safer thing, hide our excitement, or avoid trying something new because we might look ridiculous. Little by little, we start making ourselves smaller. And the hardest realization?
Most of the time, nobody asked us to.
We imagined the judgment, created a story in our heads, and began living according to it...
When I understood this, I started bringing those walls down, brick by brick. And something marvelous happened! I could breathe better. I expanded my wings and became a more real version of ME. Creative, free, joyful, unique, weird, euphoric, sometimes crazy... Perfect? Absolutely not. But ME!
Will they think I'm different?
Maybe they will. But when did being different become something we needed to protect ourselves from? As an artist, I know that creativity needs space to wander. It needs curiosity, freedom, and mistakes. And I believe the same applies to people.
Becoming who we truly are means allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, imperfect, and sometimes completely different from everyone else. Of course, other people's feelings matter. Being ourselves doesn't mean we stop listening, learning, or caring about how our actions affect others.
But there is a big difference between being considerate of others and allowing what we imagine they think to define who we are.
Listening to your own voice
What if, instead of asking What will they think of me? we begin asking What do I think of me?
Do I like the person I am becoming? Does this feel true to me? Am I choosing this because I want it, or because I'm afraid of standing out? Perhaps the more we learn to trust ourselves, the less power those imaginary voices have over our choices.
4 Gifts of letting go of what others think
1. You make room for your uniqueness
When you stop constantly editing yourself to fit in, you give your personality, creativity, and individuality room to grow.
2. You release emotional weight
Trying to manage everyone's possible opinions is exhausting. Letting go creates more space for peace and presence.
3. You build trust in yourself
The more you listen to your values and inner voice, the less you need outside approval to know who you are.
4. You choose relationships where you can be yourself
You begin recognizing the people who appreciate the real you and the relationships where you feel free to be yourself.
A gentle invitation
It happens one day at a time, one thought at a time. So here is my gentle invitation. The next time that familiar voice whispers, What will they think? What if you ask yourself:
Do I actually know what they're thinking, or is this just a story in my head?
There may be so much freedom waiting on the other side of that question. And perhaps one day we'll look back and realize something beautifully simple: Nobody was watching as closely as we thought. Because beyond fitting in is the freedom to become who you truly are.
Inspired by this reflection, I created a free coloring page called Beyond Fitting In for you to download and enjoy during a quiet moment of mindfulness. As you color, may it remind you to embrace your uniqueness, let go of imaginary judgments, and enjoy the beautiful freedom of simply being YOU.
With love,
Ale
